Australian member of the IIGEP says there was no dissension among the 11 members
In an exclusive interview to the Australian Tamil Broadcasting Corporation, the Australian member of the International Independent Group of Eminent Persons (IIGEP) invited by the Sri Lankan government to observe the conduct of its Presidential Commission of Inquiry (COI), Professor Emeritus Ivan Shearer has said that there was no dissension among the members of IIGEP. Sri Lankan government is only trying hard to give the impression that there was dissension between the Chairman Justice Bhagwati and the rest of the members, making use of the fax message sent by the former to President Rajapaksa. Professor Shearer has also said that Justice Bhagwati, in clarifying the matters raised in the IIGEP’s final report in his fax message to the President, has only softened the language in the final report by saying that the IIGEP always had an apprehension that there was a lack of political will on the government side to support a search for the truth. Professor Shearer also has said that, as opposed to what the Sri Lankan Minister of Disaster Management and Human Rights Mahinda Samarasinghe has stated, IIGEP always had a good relationship with the COI. Professor Shearer emphasised that the conflict IIGEP always had was about the role played by the Attorney General in the COI. When Professor Shearer was asked whether he will participate if he is invited by the Sri Lankan government again to participate in a new IIGEP or the same IIGEP with a different mandate, he answered that none of the members will, unless all their suggestions are accepted by the Sri Lankan government and implemented Listen to Prof Shearer's ATBC interview below.....
